Hi, I came here for interwiki linking 'year' articles to the Ripuarian Wikipedia. I've seen in Category:መንታ_መንገዶች that there are only few 'year' articles that could be interwiki linked. As it seems, these articles are pretty systematic, and boring to type. They could as well be automatically generated by a bot. If you agree, and if you can provide me with the exact information of how the calendars relate, or point me to list, an article, a website, etc. explaining it in a language that I understand, I could set a bot up that would do the labour of adding these articles. Hallo, ich bin hierhergekommen, um Jahreartikel mit der Ripuarischen Wikipedia zu verlinken. In der Category:መንታ_መንገዶች sehe ich, daß es bisher nur wenige gibt, die man bereits verlinken könnte. Sie sehen alle sehr ähnlich aus, langweilig zum Eingeben. Sie könnten genausogut automatisch von einem Programm (Bot) angelegt werden. Wenn Ihr hier einverstanden seid, und mir die notwendigen Informationen geben könnt oder einen Artikel oder eine Webseite nennen könnt, wo ich in einer für mich verständlichen Sprache finde, wie die Kalender ineinander umgerechnet werden, dann könnte ich einen Bot aufetzen, der die Arbeit des Anlegens übernimmt. If you want to make እ.ኤ.አ. disambiguation pages for any European years from 1901 to 2099, they all start the new Ethiopian year on Sep. 11, except for the years listed in the first column at Wikipedia:የቀን መለወጫ, when they start on Sep. 12. So the articles for 1999 እ.ኤ.አ., 1995 እ.ኤ.አ., 1991 እ.ኤ.አ., 1987 እ.ኤ.አ., etc. should follow the pattern of 2003 እ.ኤ.አ.. Years before 1901 would follow a different pattern. Years from 9 on can be determined from the software at http://www.funaba.org/en/calendar-conversion.cgi . The disambiguation pages do increase the article count, but ideally links to them will eventually be replaced with links pointing to the correct Ethiopian year, so they are of temporary use and have only been created on an as-needed basis. I can always find out if any are in greater demand by checking the top 1000 Special:Wantedpages which shows how many redlinks each one has in other pages. For example, right now 1976 እ.ኤ.ኣ. at #745 is the most wanted such page, with two pages containing this redlink, and they are a user page and the associated talk page, not even articles. (For consistency the last character would be spelled አ. instead of ኣ.) In other words, these year disambiguation pages are not a really great priority at the moment.
My procedure for creating regular year pages that show events has also been to pick the years off the wanted list that have the most listable events on other articles. When we got about five years in any one decade, I created these decade indexes: 1950ዎቹ and 1960ዎቹ. If you look at these two articles, it seems like something a bot could be programmed to do for other decades, that would be very useful. The three links at top are previous, current and next centuries, in all cases the century number such as 19, 20, 21 can be followed by ኛ (ordinal suffix). The links in the second section are decades, note that in all these cases the decade number is followed by ዎቹ, except for the '10s which is followed by ሮቹ. The third section has links to the years in that decade, note that all of these articles have also been made to link to each other, which could also be automated. Can your bot do that? My bot is currently creating stub articles for those (european) years from 1 to 2010 which do not exist yet, that is ~850 new articles. They have already links to the እ.ኤ.አ. disambiguation pages - I do not mind to create all of those ~1980 articles with the bot, too. My labour is the same, no matter how many pages created. I understand that the disambiguation articles are unimportant for you, but I see them as valuable for interlinking between the wikies of various languages and cultures. I think, there is nothing else, that an article about an european year of an european Wikipedia could link to in the Amharic Wikipedia, isn't it? Also, even if there are not many Ethiopian year articles yet, they will come, and it's nice the have the links already in place, I think. --Purodha Blissenbach 12:07, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay, several external incidents kept me from continuing. Now, I have a bot setup ready for the year disambiguation articles, as the 1st step. These questions remain:
  1. The article 1889 እ.ኤ.አ. starts with Template:ሹካ, which is different from all other such articles. The others use Template:መንታ, which is also called internally by Template:ሹካ, so finally there is currently not a real difference between them.
  2. Inside Template:መንታ, there is the code to put the pages including it into the category:መንታ መንገዶች.
    Quoting from my talk page:
    (...) The category መንታ መንገዶች means all disambiguation pages, not just the year-related ones. They may need to be moved to another subcat at some point, which I know is a lot of work. (...) ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 12:31, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
    Thus I suggest these amendments:
    1. Give Template:መንታ a parameter, which is the name of the category. If the parameter is omitted, then the category:መንታ መንገዶች is automatically used. Else, it would usually be a subcat thereof.
      (Since that does not break anything, I simply implement that. If you feel that would be a bad idea, just revert my chance)
    2. In the disambiguation articles, such as 2000 እ.ኤ.አ., the bot might use {{:Template:መንታ|መንታ መንገዶች}} which can later be changed if needed in all bot created articles, or better, the bot uses a new template which only calls {{:Template:መንታ|መንታ መንገዶች}} internally, so we have only one central place at which all year disambiguation articles can be put in a subcategory with only one change. I strongly suggest the latter, but I don't know how to name the new template in amharic.
  3. I suggest to have a template for the two lines of disambiguation displaying the dates a well. Thus, if modifications should be required at some time in the future, they need to be made only at one place.
Since I do not know how the suggested templates should be named, I give them temporary names, and ask you to alter them to something useful in amharic language. I let the bot upload 2000 እ.ኤ.አ. with the temporary names Template:European year A.D. disambiguation head and Template:European year_A.D. disambiguation text , so as to have a sample demonstrating how they work. --Purodha Blissenbach 16:18, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

The pages the bot made so far end in እ.ኤ.ኣ. like some of the one that already were there... but others end in እ.ኤ.አ. (I don't know if you saw the slight difference in the last character). Either one is considered correct, but I would prefer to have them all end in እ.ኤ.አ. instead of እ.ኤ.ኣ. I was also wondering if we ought to link the words January September and December, they can always redirect to articles explaining those months. As for the templates, moving them later wouldn't involve changing every article because a redirected template automatically calls the template through the old name. On my display, the difference between አ and ኣ is a bit hard to recognize, depending on the font. One of them was used in the page title, the other in the page text, that I took as a refeernce. Since you essentially say, they are interchangeable, I tried to make it so, as you said, and in addition add a redirect from the ...ኣ. page titles to the ...አ. page titles for all years, since users can likely be expected to be typing either. Unfortunately, the pywikipediabot software framework that I am building upon, refuses to accept አ as a valid unicode character. All technical problems solved. The work can begin.
  • May I suggest to flag Purbo T as a bot, if you like so, so as to not have it clutter the RecentChanges for everyone?
  • If you don't advise otherwise, existing year articles shall be replaced so as to have them all uniformly use the templates. Edit history is kept, of course.
  • Usually, the bot would run at a pace of about 4 edits a minute, thus it would take roughly about a day to have all year articles and redirects created. Please tell me, if you like something else. Both quicker and slower are possible.

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within *** hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language issues. The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.

ባለፈው ከElfalem ጋር ስለአማርኛው ፊደላት ተወያይተን ነበር። I have noticed that in other Wikipedias like Arabic Wikipedia anyone can search an article with English name and get the article in Arabic. Since redirecting may not solve the problem permanently and the Amharic font may not be visible on the machine of every user, we can add the article's corresponding English name on the body of the article so users can find the Amharic body of the article by using it's English title name. Please we got to talk about this. Since the Amharic language has it's own rules of spelling a word, we have to decide which rules are useful for this site and which are not. ምሳሌ፡ ፀሐይ is the correct spelling but users write ጸሀይ as these letters appear on one hit. But the article can't be found using this name and the user miss that well bodied article. So here the Amharic spelling language affect our site negatively. If you go to my አባል ገጽ you will see my attempt at a new main page to coincide with the new wikipedia look. I would really appreciate if you guys give me ideas suggestion and criticisms. I am thinking making the main page more dynamic so we have information on new articles right upfront, and then having a separate page for learners which will be accessible from the top tabs, as well so that the main page does not look congested I am thinking moving all "selected articles", "wikipedia language" and "wikipedia sisters" into their own pages which will be accessible again via tabs.

With regard to the "wikipedia languages" section, I've been wondering if we shouldn't just scrap it, since it hasn't been much maintained for years, and is probably badly out of date, and we might not really need it. Wow! You keep on amazing me, Hgetnet. First I would like to point out my favorite parts. I think the transparent globe logo with the welcome message and today's date is simply PERFECT. I also really like the big Lalibela picture although we might need to polish it to make it look smoother but that is not a big issue at all. The small box that says "ምርጥ ጽሁፎች" kind of looks out of place and it keeps moving around when you change tabs. Regarding the color combination, we will eventually have to settle with either the purple theme or the older green one because they don't nice together in my opinion. ፈቃደ: since I did not know how to link to the latest language list I have left it as it is. If you can show me how, I can then link it up. Elfalem: as u suggested I have fixed the lalibela picture. I know it makes the page a little contrived but I felt if I left it out the page will look very cold and unresponsive. So i tried to make it feel a little unique by including the pic. The ምርጥ ጽሁፍ issue is now fixed. The color combo is still up for discussion. This is by no means the final product -- if u have suggestion or want to change it completely I am ok with it. I tried to leave enough comment in there so if u want to change it is easy to see what I was doing. .... I really think there is a lot more to be done..but this is as far as i can go before the august 25 deadline.

Hgetnet, thank you for all that you have done. I'll try to improve the layout at the top since the Lalibela picture appears lower (and superimposes on the tab pages) because it is not able to fit it inline with the welcome message and the other links. Anyways, I think the most important issue regarding the upcoming skin change is concerning Amharic input. I have added code to the vector skin so that Ge'ez input is the default when you try to edit and 'Esc' can be used to toggle with the Latin alphabet. However, I was not able to get the message at the top that says "use 'Esc' to switch between...." to appear. Another problem is that Ge'ez input is not possible in the search box on the new skin which I believe is a significant issue. I'll try to work on these. Elfalem 05:12, 25 ኦገስት 2010 (UTC)

hi Elfalem My esc button does not work. Well it used to work when I as using firefox but it has stopped toggling after I switched to chrome. And no matter how much I try I was unable to beat the deadline because of the lay out issue I had with respect to መለጠፊያ፡ዋናው ገጽ. If I leave out the |}, somehow the code bleeds through out the rest of the code and mess up the lay out of everything else. I know there is something wrong with the መለጠፊያ፡ ዋናው ገጽ ... I am tired of looking for it. If you have experience in these things I wish u could give it a once over. Also in the Beta, I dont see any option to toggle between Amharic and English when posting. Great, the |} issue is fixed. Yes, there is no option that says to toggle in the beta version. But if you actually press esc, it should toggle. So the functionality is there but I just don't know how to write the message at the top. And no its not because you switched to chrome, it should work in any browser. The meta translators are already actively engaged in the annual drive to distribute our messages and we encourage you to do the same, but we would like to point everyone to the developments we've made in banner messages- from creation to commentary to the ones that will go live for test and for the drive itself in November. It's one of our goals to make sure that all volunteers know that there is a place for them in the Fundraising drive. We've started the setup on meta for both banner submission, statistical analysis, and grouping volunteers together that would like to find specific focus and work in that area.

This year the Wikimedia Foundation is taking a proactive stance in reaching out to each and every Wikimedia project and volunteer to find innovation, collaboration, and collation of ideas from the community driven process. The staff working on this is comprised of long-time Wikimedians with as much care and concern for the success of this drive as the volunteers, and we want you to actively participate and have a voice.

Thanks so much Codex. May be the right side pictures need a bypass refresh. Can you try ctrl+F5 or Shift+F5 or Shift+Refresh or any other combination of keys so that you can bypass the local cache? Also the tabs are implemented using the Metacaixa መለጠፊያ. Sorry it is in Spanish but so long as you provide Tab Title, Tab Icon and Tab Body (here u can use plain letters or መለጠፊያ ), it will faithfully translate it into a tab. That's Spanish? I thought it was Portuguese! The problem for me isn't caches, it seems to be a 'screen width' thing. On my browser, I can see the two pics on the Front page, but only a strip along the leftmost half-inch or so of each pic. I don't know if anyone else is having his problem. It is actually Catalan which is spoken in Spain and surrounding areas. I can be very imprecise, sorry. The picture problem is stumping me because I tested it using 3 browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and IE8). I am using a laptop which is 15". Do you still not see the pictures when you zoom out in your browser? I can reduce the size of pictures if you can see them when you zoom out. Please let me know. I just tested it in 3 browsers too, and got very different results with each one. Normally I use Firefox. With Opera, I can see the whole pictures, but there are other screen-width issues. On both Firefox and Opera, the last tab on the tab box is broken in half so that the word በየቋንቋው comes out underneath ዋናው ገጽ... With Explorer, The tabs all come out on the same row, but the pics are only strips as on Firefox. This may be because I have such an old, unsupported Windows (ME) on my old computer, that I have to use old versions of these browsers, ie Firefox 2 and IE 6. I have gotten rid of the last Tab - I have put the content of that tab together with the 4th tab. The IE browser has issues with respect to the pictures and I really dislike how the fonts appear in IE. Anyhow, since I fixed the tab issue, I am hoping everything works fine for you - tabs and pictures in Opera. If you still want the pictures to work in firefox, since I dont know your screen size and the issues I will give you the template pages so you can experiment with them. I'm sorry that such a dispute had to occur. However, I don't I fully understand the issue because it seems to me that the Book of Aksum view is still in the article. It's that previously, the article was NPOV as it mentioned everything about all the significant POVs, including the Book of Aksum's, Ato Tsegaye's, and Liddell's, including the fact that nobody has been found suggesting that Greek etymology before Liddell. The classical view was Pliny's view that it was nmed for a person. But I was also very rudely treated on several talkpages, threatened with sanction, and told that Liddell is correct (which the article now has been forced to say) as well as that the other views are fringe theories and folk etymologies. If anything is a folk etymology, it's Liddell if you ask me. Never mind their insistence that the Bible is "mythology" because everyone who disagrees is a "fringe theorist" and should be blocked. The appeal from Jimmy Wales and the corresponding banner have been tested head-to-head with other successful banners, and the results are clear: it's our best performing message... by a lot. This year we have a lofty fundraising goal; we need all of our banners to bring in donations like the Jimmy Appeal, but no one wants to keep the Jimmy banner up for two months. Actually, at this time it appears the prefix is በር፡ (with a serez) and not በር: (with a colon). So as far as the software can tell all of the pages starting with በር:: are still articles counted in article space! For them to be treated as portals as it is now, they would have to be moved to (በር፡:ምናምን)... ! And the titles would still need to be changed again when the prefix correctly becomes በር... Grrr! I hate these stupid software bugs! A tiny seemingly insignificant detail of punctuation causes one problem, that leads to another and another, and gets worse with each fix, until everything is hopelessly tangled up!
At present ALL of the pages beginning with በር:: are inaccessible. They cannot be deleted, moved, or viewed. The only way to see what they would have looked like, is by clicking on the creation history, but you still can't get to the source code from there to copy them. We may be able to reconstruct them in the right place, but I do hope these inaccessible pages don't become permanent edifices that occupy space, cannot be deleted, and must be worked around. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 13:13, 15 ሜይ 2011 (UTC)

I was able to access the full source code of the inaccessible pages through my RSS feed. I have reconstructed them in the correct portal namespace. As to the inaccessible pages themselves, I don't think we can do anything about them since they are in a namespace that no longer exists. Elfalem 19:11, 15 ሜይ 2011 (UTC)

Those inaccessible pages do seem to be causing another problem: None of the 'special pages' has updated since May 16. Normally, most of them were updated every 3 days at the latest. If you look at the 'shortest pages' list, there is now a blank space in numbers 2 and 3, that seems to represent some of these malformed portals, the ones with two semi-colons. I would guess this bug has something to do with keeping the software from re-loading the page. This is way beyond my understanding or ability to fix, and I think a developer should be contacted. We have initiated a writing competition about Ethiopian Culture and Beta Israeli Heritage. It is partially sponsored by the Israeli chapter of Wikimedia Foundation and was welcomed by the Ethiopian ambassador to Israel, as well as other notable persons and organizations.

We currently accept articles submitted in Hebrew, English or French. Of course we'd be happy to expand the competition to articles submitted in Amharic or Tigrigna, but only one of our judges masters the written language well enough to appreciate the quality of the submitted articles.

We'd be most grateful if you could help us spread the word about the competition. Open a relevant project page at the Amharic Wikipedia and, if possible, print out the flier of the competition. Your feedback and comments are also most welcome of course.

The Wikimedia Foundation has brought together a new team of developers who are dedicated to language support. This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a language support team.

This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Formal knowledge is definitely appreciated.

The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:

  • Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
  • New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
  • The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
  • Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
  • Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
  • Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
  • The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
  • More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
  • Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
  • Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
  • Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

On the next couple of days we will be kicking off our Regional Fundraising Tests, targeting the countries that we took down for 10 days during our Annual Fundraiser last year. Our main goal is to provide an improved donor experience in each of these countries while decreasing the number of fundraising days.

The campaigns will be grouped by region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Middle East) for better efficiency as we work on localizing currencies, ask strings and local appeals.

Our first test will be on a few Portuguese and English speaking countries in Africa (specifically MZ, AO, CV, GW, ST, BW, NA, ZW), and it will last from 02/07 up to 02/14 (only 7 days!!). This test has the goal to compare the Jimmy appeal vs a local appeal as well as compare high vs low ask strings. Pats Pena
