Hi Codex Sinaiticus,

While looking around I noticed you've been recently creating some Babel templates on am-wikipedia. That's great! Users love to express their languages and it makes it easy to find people. However I'd like to let you know that since a few months we've installed the Babel MediaWiki-extension on all wikis. Which enables use of the code in the wiki-text. Making templates like Babel and User de-4 no longer needed. They are also automatically translated and kept up to date etc. Greetings, Krinkle 21:13, 1 ፌብሩዌሪ 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As part of my regular maintenance, I check ልዩ:WantedTemplates to see if any important templates are linked more than once from other pages. If more than one user has a template on their user page, it will show up there, and I supply it as a 'wanted template'. It's up to users to use the new system if they wish, since I'm not going to go around modifying all their pages. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 08:36, 2 ፌብሩዌሪ 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Amharic name of government agency

On page 2 of this document http://www.lebcaa.com/pdfs/App%20A.pdf it states the Amharic name of the en:Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority. What is the Amharic name?

Also would somebody mind starting an Amharic article on the en:Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ethiopia)?

Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 16:01, 29 ኤይፕርል 2012 (UTC)

The Amharic name of the ECAA as given in that document is የኢትዮጵያ ሲቪል ኤቪዬሽን ባለሥልጣን.
It doesn't seem like there are enough editors interested in writing Amharic articles at the moment, I don't know why... but you could list it on requested articles. Have a nice day, ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 16:21, 29 ኤይፕርል 2012 (UTC)

።Where is the requested articles page? Historically there have been editors who have done requested articles, so hopefully on the requested articles page they will see the requests. Thanks for your help! WhisperToMe (talk) 16:35, 8 ሜይ 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have created a stub at የኢትዮጵያ ሲቪል ኤቪዬሽን ባለሥልጣን. I currently don't have much free time but I've seen your request for a while. Elfalem (talk) 23:33, 8 ሜይ 2012 (UTC)[reply]

፡።Thank you so much, Elfalem! I just put the external links section in. If/when someone has the time, I would appreciate it if one attempts to create those articles. Since you might have constraints on your time, please start the stubs whenever it is convenient. The remaining requests are en:Mickey Leland and en:Ethiopian Civil War. WhisperToMe (talk) 06:49, 9 ሜይ 2012 (UTC) ፡።፡Thanks for pointing out the page! I am adding the requests there! WhisperToMe (talk) 14:12, 9 ሜይ 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Free digital camera available

Hi guys, I just wanted to find out if 1) either of you are situated in Ethiopia or 2) know of any editors who are in Ethiopia, who might be interested in this. Ethiopia isn't very well represented on Commons in relation to photos, and if a camera would assist an editor in Ethiopia to help to increase our coverage of Ethiopian photos, then I believe this is a great opportunity for an Ethiopian editor and for Wikimedia/Wikipedia. Feel free to drop me, or JJ Harrison a line if interested, or know of someone who could benefit from this opportunity. If you contact JJ, let him know that I let you know of this opportunity. Input method/transliteration

Hello, I see that you're active on translatewiki.net, where we're testing an extension which is now enabled on many wikis with problematic fonts/scripts, Narayam. The extesion should be able to make the wiki support the script natively, without MediaWiki:Translit.js. Could you please test it on translatewiki.net? You only have to follow the instructions: basically login, set your language to Amharic, enable the input method with ctrl+M and type something to see if it works. Thanks, Nemo bis (talk) 15:12, 9 ሰፕቴምበር 2012 (UTC)

Hi Codex, this is related to the problem I mentioned on my sub userpage talk where I mentioned the automatic Amharicisation (is that a word) of any text inputted in the edit windows. The escape key, etc doesn't work, and one has to change the skin to "Modern" in order to be able to type in Latin lettering. Cheers, Russavia (talk) 16:40, 9 ሰፕቴምበር 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I can make a stub; his artistic achievements are clearly encyclopedic. Alexander_Tatarnikov spam

Hi Codex, thanks for leaving note on your edits, otherwise I wouldn't know that this wiki is different. First, sorry to use English, as I don't know Amharic. Second, the proof of this spam can be seen in meta. This is actually very persistent spammer that has infested dozens of wikis, and we have proof that he created hundreds(!) -- I'm not kidding -- socks for this purpose. The decision to keep the article I leave it to the Amharic community, but we stewards suggest that it is deleted permanently, and salted (i.e. blacklisted). Below is the list of discussions elsewhere. Warm regards, Bennylin (talk) 15:01, 26 ማርች 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If the Amharic literate community decides it is non-notable we will delete it but I do not see what problem it is causing. Steward who cannot read Amharic should not come in and delete Amharic pages based on a decision taken by non-Amharic speakers, from which Amharic speakers were excluded, on some other wiki. You are following a very interesting "protocol". ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 15:12, 26 ማርች 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have a list of 73 articles in separate Wikipedias that he created in a short period of time, using 278 sock-accounts, which is ever increasing (common sense said that he must use automated translation tools). That's against WMF policy, and as the result, all his articles (which falls short under scrutiny in the first place, unless a project really have a low standard of inclusion), were deleted in all those projects. It's SOP. Since this is a project that's under Global-sysop, and by extension steward's care, global sysop, with the help of certain investigation tools, could delete pages in those wikis, (or if the article was not blantant vandalism, we first marked them with delete tag as I did, and wait for second opinion), which contains vandalism, nonsense, promotionals (including self-vanity like this), and other which otherwise might be under the radar of the project's local communities. This is the only place out of 70+ Wikipedias where a local community expressed disagreement regarding this cross-wiki sockmaster, and as such, we have taken note of it, and I have informed other stewards about this project's decision. Regards, Bennylin (talk) 12:44, 27 ማርች 2014 (UTC)[reply]

When they came out with global sysop they said larger language wikis with no need could opt out of it. I did everything I could to opt out of it, because Amharic speakers do not need Amahric-illiterate caretakers for much of anything. However, the nightmare continues regardless. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 13:12, 27 ማርች 2014 (UTC)[reply]

According to this page, the Amharic Wikipedia community should be able to opt-out of global-sysop actions. As such, I suggest that we obtain community consensus and opt-out. Elfalem (talk) 01:50, 30 ማርች 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, but had thought we already opted out at least once. We also apparently have a "Small Wiki Monitoring Team"... ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 07:49, 30 ማርች 2014 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

This account is now locked, I don't think he longer needs any userpage. As I wrote at it.wiktionary that's the hughest crosswiki promotion I've ever seen. --Vituzzu (talk) 19:36, 26 ማርች 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An important message about renaming users

Dear Codex Sinaiticus, My aplogies for writing in English. Please translate or have this translated for you if it will help. I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 ኦገስት 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi mate, how are you? I hope all is well. Mate, I have been doing some image work on Commons and have come across two Ethiopian subjects which I don't think there are currently articles for on Amharic Wikipedia, and which I think would make a great addition. The articles being en:Catherine Hamlin and en:Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital.

I'm going to do a little bit of work on these articles on English Wikipedia in the near future. Once done, would you possibly be able to help with translating them into Amharic? If so, I can drop you a line when done. Cheers, Russavia (talk) 03:49, 6 ኦክቶበር 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why the block on Beetstra? Please explain

I see that you have blocked User:Beetstra and supposedly for edits on English Wikipedia. Will you please demonstrate to me which local policy Beetstra has breached. Further would you please demonstrate to me which component of the local or generic WMF blocking policies you have utilised to implement this block. At this point your block looks to be vindictive and based on you not liking what he has said, and said somewhere else, rather than based on a breach of policy. I look forward to your response and clear indication of why the block is in place, and how you have determined the length of the block. Billinghurst (talk) 00:56, 2 ኖቬምበር 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It has now been four months, and you have been unable to provide answer to this matter. Would you please provide an answer to why you have blocked Beetstra. Thanks. Billinghurst (talk) 03:03, 10 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As you are unwilling to enter a discussion about this block, and as you have presented no evidence to support this block, I have asked one of your fellow administrators to remove the block on Beetstra. Billinghurst (talk) 10:08, 24 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm unwilling to have a discussion in English with you. I am more than willing to discuss this with anyone in Amharic, since this is the Amharic encyclopedia, and imperialism is dead. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 13:19, 24 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wiktionary

Hi there. Sorry for speaking in English ;c I really appreciate your work here and I want to help this language at Wiktionary. I don't see any users there. I'm trying to create an entry but because of the lack of knowledge of Amharic, it's quite difficult to create one. This is one of the entry Januari. I need translations for every part (etymology and pronunciation) Would you like to help me? Pretty please? --Malaysiaboy (talk) 14:27, 5 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to write an Amharic dictionary without knowing Amharic does sound like an exceptional challenge...! However, "having said that'... your entry for Januari does seem to correctly cover all the essential information... [2] You have the Amharic translation, the English translation (January), the IPA pronunciation and the Arabic alphabet transliteration, and it all seems correct. If you want the pronunciation of the Malaysian word in Amharic writing, it would be /ጃኑዋሪ/, and the etymology is undoubtedly from English January, since that is the only European language where J- sounds like /dʒ-/... ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 18:50, 5 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for the review. I love helping other languages by adding Malay entries. I think am.wikt should have an entry layout. For example:
ማላይኛ
የተፀውኦ ስም
Januari (ሩሚ አጻጻፍ)፣ جانواري (ጃዊ አጻጻፍ)
# ጃንዩዌሪ

አመጣጥ
ከ እንግሊዝኛ January.

አጠራር
* በፊደል: /ጃኑዋሪ/
* IPA: /dʒanuari/
What do you think? Could you try translate it please? --Malaysiaboy (talk) 12:15, 7 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Does IPA should be translated too? It's stand for International Phonetic Alphabet. Oh yeah and I forgot for Rumi (Latin/Roman script) entry. What's the meaning of በፊደል? --Malaysiaboy (talk) 01:45, 9 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I reordered it a little. IPA should be linked to an entry explaining those initials. በፊደል means in fidel or Ethiopic script. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 02:52, 9 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! Is ሩሚ አጻጻፍ Rumi spelling? So if I created a Jawi entry it will be:
جانواري (ጃዊ አጻጻፍ)፣ Januari (ሩሚ አጻጻፍ)
? --Malaysiaboy (talk) 04:09, 10 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Malay Wikipedia has made a page of Malay Introduction. Would you like to add your language to there. All you need is to translate this:

Want to know about Malay? The Malay language is of Austronesian stock, spoken mainly in the Malay Archipelago of Southeast Asia namely the countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Southern Thailand, the Southern Philippines and even as far as Christmas Island in Australia. The language achieved the status of lingua franca in the region during the height of the Malaccan Sultanate in the 15th and 16th century. As of late the importance of Malay as a language is being noted worldwide.

Thanks a lot for helping me! --Malaysiaboy (talk) 06:08, 10 ጃንዩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again! How are you? I have a question to ask. Is Amharic and Tigrinya the same? The writing seems same to me. --Malaysiaboy (talk) 05:51, 22 ፌብሩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No, Amharic and Tigrinya are two different but related languages that use similar alphabets, like English and German. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 14:52, 22 ፌብሩዌሪ 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to Medical Translation

Medical Translation Project

Invitation to the Medical Translation Project – a joint Wikimedia project started by the English language WikiProject Medicine!

Thank you for being one of the top Medical editors! I want to use this opportunity to introduce you to our most ambitious project.

We want to use Wikipedia to spread knowledge where it will be used. Studies have shown that Wikipedia is the most common resource of medical knowledge, and used by more people than any other source! We want high quality articles, available to everyone, regardless of language ability. It isn't right that you would need to know a major language to get hold of quality content!

That is why in the recent Ebola crisis (which is still ongoing) we translated information into over 70 languages, many of them small African languages. This was important, as Wikipedia was also shown to be the biggest resource used in Africa for information on Ebola! We see tremendous potential, but also great risks as our information needs to be accurate and well-researched. We only translate articles that have been reviewed by medical doctors and experts, so that what we translate is correct. Many of our translators are professionals, but many are also volunteers, and we need more of you guys – both to translate, but also to import finished translations, and fix grammatical or other style issues that are introduced by the translation process.

Our articles are not only translated into small languages, but also to larger ones, but as of 2015 this requires users to apply for an article to be translated, which can be done here (full articles, short articles) with an easy to manage google document.

So regardless of your background head over to our main page for more information, or to our talk page and ask us questions. Feel free to respond in any language, we will do our best to find some way to communicate. No task is too small, and we need everyone to help out!

I hope you will forgive me for sending this message in English – we also need translators for messages like this, and above all local language community managers, which act as a link between us and you. Also I can not reply on your talk page, so please go to our talk page!

Thank you for helping medical information on Wikipedia grow! -- CFCF 🍌 (email) 15:37, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Codex I looked what you have done at https://am.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:%E1%8C%A5%E1%8A%95%E1%89%B3%E1%8B%8A_%E1%88%8D%E1%88%B3%E1%8A%93%E1%89%B5_%E1%88%B7%E1%8B%B4%E1%88%BD and impressed. Good job. Have some request though. 1. Would you catagorise the words, such as noun, verb...etc and put them in alphabetical order? 2. I was away for a long time and lost my sysop staus. Do you mind adding word intry templates like the fallowing in the amharic wiktionary? It makes it easier to add new words. I did add priviously and some one removed it. https://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?search=word+template&title=Special%3ASearch&go=Go 3. Creaing new language wiki is becoming a hassel. But Thhere is great deal of interest being generated online in learning the language. If we create an incubator and see how much support the language would have.

Ipblock-exempt

Hello dear Codex Sinaiticus, I would like requesting ipblock-exempt right on this wiki. Grind24 (talk) 16:31, 14 ሜይ 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I can't imagine why you would ever worry about being blocked on Amharic wikipedia, so why on Earth would you need it? ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 16:42, 14 ሜይ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I would be anonymous on internet (in my country, the government has just made a law who permitted them to espionning people) but when I using Tor I can't edit wikipedia's pages (if I login without, they could know what is my ip and who I am/where I live/what I am doing/who are my friend…). In there can you give me some privacy?--Grind24 (talk) 21:44, 29 ሜይ 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Please remove my IPblock-exempt right here . I already have a global IpBlock-exemption.Thanks.--Grind24 (talk) 20:23, 11 ዲሴምበር 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Translation request in Amharic for en:Radio Studio 54 Network. Thanks in advance

Dear Codex,

I'm writing to say hello and know how you are. In addition to this the courtesy to ask if you can translate in Amharic, the article about a radio station among the most famous in Italy, very popular in the south Italy, audible even via web streaming from the many Calabrians in the world. Natualmente when you can do it, the important thing to be translated any item according to the English version. Then I will translate what you want in Italian and French, and Spanish. While waiting to hear from you thank you as always for your time and kindness.--Luigi Salvatore Vadacchino (talk) 13:09, 2 ጁን 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Luigi, I will be happy to make an article for that station. The English version translation has a few issues, making it hard for me to understand, but I will take a look at the Italian and French ones and try to come up with something. Regards, ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 15:08, 2 ጁን 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning to you Dear Codex,

I came back to ask if you can translate the article in the radio, for now I'm okay with a stub of all the things there are, the important thing is that there are the names of the various speakers and presenters. Then ask the translation that you have to do in Italian and will do it. thank you very much and I'm sorry if I disturbed.--Luigi Salvatore Vadacchino (talk) 13:04, 20 ጁን 2015 (UTC)[reply]

English is my native language, but as a native speaker I honestly don't know how to translate the "History" section because it is so confusing I have no idea what it is talking about. I believe it needs attention from a native speaker who is familiar with what it is trying to say. But I would be happy to translate it once I can get some meaning out of it. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 15:43, 20 ጁን 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I mean like this sentence: "Like almost all the free radio stations began as a game, and then in the early 1990s, came the awareness of not leaving behind career goals." I could translate literally into Amharic but it would be strange (as it is in English) because it is unclear to whom the "awareness" came, what "career goals" are or where they had been left behind, or what the significance of this is. It would be interesting to know what sort of game it began as, but in the next sentence we read "With the Mammì law for the Italian broadcast in 1990, the game replaces the company." If it began as a game how does it replace a company? Or perhaps it meant to say "the game was replaced by a company" but I really don't know and it is still vague. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 16:01, 20 ጁን 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Translating from French:

Studio54network was born June 6, 1985 on the initiative of Parretta Pietro Francesco Massara, Enzo Gatto, Memmo Minniti and Pietro Musmeci, under the name of Radio Studio 54 DJ Club.

Like almost all the Italian free radio, it arises from the game before taking, in the 90s, a more professional turn.

With the Mammi law for the organization of Italian radio and television broadcasts, in 1990, she became a corporation.

In 1991, she became the first radio in Calabria (and among the first in Italy) to broadcast Radio Data System .

In 1994, the distribution is computerized, allowing making punctuality and quality of transmissions unattainable with analog equipment.

From 1995 to the acquisition of the other Calabrian issuers, she released the historical boundaries of the Ionian coast Reggine expanding to Calabria and neighboring regions.

In 1997 he was among the first to experience the Italian radio streaming by webcast through technology RealAudio .

In 1998, she adopted the name Studio54Network.

In 2000 the realization of the first mobile studio Stargate marks the beginning of a new editorial policy: radio broadcasting from the street, among the people.

Now, try to make sense of the translation I think it is easier now. thanks a lot--Luigi Salvatore Vadacchino (talk) 12:57, 21 ጁን 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Page Merge

User:Codex Sinaiticus, I help coordinate medical translations for the Medical Translation Taskforce. Recently, I mistakenly created a new page where one already existed. As a non-speaker, I need help merging these articles. Can you please recruit the local community to help. I assume there is valuable content on both pages. Thanks, and sorry for the mistake. Hi Codex Sinaiticus

I've deleted the content of አባል ውይይት:213.55.92.81 because of the deletion request. But of course it's o.k. if you think it's better to keep the content.

And sorry for deletion of ባንገርስ ኧንድ ማሽ. Of course it's better if the decision is made by Amharic speakers.

Unuseful pages

Hello. You seems to be admin here. I found that there are many pages that have no useful content, in other words, there's nothing to read. Please consider to delete those pages listed at ልዩ:አጫጭር_ገጾች (That would be better than I put delete tags on all of them.) --Octahedron80 (talk) 03:17, 23 ማርች 2016 (UTC)[reply]

At this line you might already read my messages. Please understand my point, and, think about those blank pages again. You have your power.

Firstly, I'm here just to check some vocab to make good on Wiktionary. Later I found mistakes then I urged to correct. I have been in WP for nearly 10 years. I don't want to ruin anything. --Octahedron80 (talk) 12:13, 23 ማርች 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dictionary

This topic is not about the talk page we were recently. I just want to ask. Does Ethiopia have national, official dictionary? That would be a good standard for spelling words (and education either). My country, Thailand, has an agent to make the book and it ends most of typographical contradiction. (If not so, you should appeal to your gov.) --Octahedron80 (talk) 16:37, 24 ማርች 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I believe Amharic indeed originated as a government language and the education and schools in Ethiopia have complete dictionaries, but as for us at wikipedia we are not affiliated with any particular government that we call 'our' government. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 17:08, 24 ማርች 2016 (UTC)[reply]

We are not related with any gov, but we still depend on the Wikimedia foundation. :) --Octahedron80 (talk) 17:19, 24 ማርች 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Are you interested in Wiktionary? Even I have been in Wikipedia for many years, but there are more other projects needing attention. Now I mainly contribute at Thai Wiktionary. (That's why I am quite serious about spelling.) --Octahedron80 (talk) 00:27, 25 ማርች 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Year Formatting in Country Infoboxes

Sorry to bother you, I have been making country infoboxes and struggling to indicate population estimate years as being either of the Ethiopian or Gregorian calendar. I've seen several different formats in the wiki, can you explain which is best, for dates of independence, census years, etc... I'm using 2009/2017 as an example year.

For Ethiopian Calendar dates, its generally written as (is it correct?):

 • 2009 ዓ.ም. (for an Ethiopian estimate year of 2009 written as የ2009 ዓ.ም ግምት) (2017 on Gregorian calendar)

For Gregorian calendar dates, I don't know which way is correct, or even if it indicates gregorian:

 • 2017 (እ.አ.አ.) (for a Gregorian estimate year of 2017 written as የ2017 እ.ኤ.አ. ግምት) (2009 on Ethiopian calendar)
 • እ.አ.አ. በ2017 (for a Gregorian estimate year of 2017 written as የእ.አ.አ. በ2017 ግምት) (2009 on Ethiopian calendar)

Could you give an example of how to write a Persian calendar date (and indicate so) properly?

For some countries, specifically former Soviet States in the Southern bloc, sometimes two+ calendar date clarifications are needed based on which system was used at the time of such major event (ex, Babur exile, conquest, Sovietization, independence...) I've tried googling with varying results. Could you please clarify which way is correct for which system? Thank you so much. :) PlanespotterA320 (talk) 17:53, 3 ኦገስት 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that is correct for Ethiopian years eg 2009 ዓ.ም.

For Gregorian years, you may see various formats in Amharic writing, but since we have articles for each Gregorian year formatted to be linked as eg 2017 እ.ኤ.አ., that is the preferred style - note this uses ኤ as the middle abbreviation and not አ.

These are the only two types of calendar years commonly used in Amharic nowadays, Persian or other calendars would not be used and should be converted intyo one or the other of these calendars.
